本書不是講述種種神話，而是闡述神話研究的種種方法，或者說神話的種種理論，並且是限定在現代神話理論的範圍之內。神話理論和神話本身一樣古老，其出現至少可以追溯到前蘇格拉底時代。

本書論及的所有理論都把神話看作故事。誠然，泰勒(E. B. Taylor)將故事轉變成了一種不言而喻的概括，但這一概括依然要由故事來承載。列維–施特勞斯(Claude Lévi-Strauss)超脫於故事以尋求神話的「結構」，但同樣的，結構要由故事來承載。從象徵意義而不是字面意義來解讀神話的理論仍然把神話的主題—或者說意義—看作是故事的展開。如果說神話被看作是故事，那麼，這故事講述的是甚麼呢？
